Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP)

All GP trainees have an Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) once every 12 calendar months. For most trainees this takes place in June or July, although some who are out of sync may have their ARCP at other times in the year.

The ARCP panel reviews your progress using evidence from your Trainee Portfolio, including Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA), learning logs, supervisor reports and mandatory requirements. The RCGP WPBA Requirements & Evidence Summary Sheet provides an up‑to‑date checklist of what is needed in each training year and is strongly recommended for ARCP preparation.

You are not usually required to attend the ARCP panel in person or online. If attendance is needed (for example, to discuss progression or support), you will be contacted in advance with details.

ARCP panels should take place within two calendar months of the end of the period under review, and your Educational Supervisor Report (ESR) is normally completed in the two months before the panel date. Keeping your portfolio up to date throughout the year will make ARCP preparation more straightforward and help the panel make a clear judgement on your progression.

How ARCP Meetings Are Held

Currently, ARCP panels are held online via Microsoft Teams. This format is used across the UK and allows panels to run efficiently while ensuring all required documentation is reviewed securely.

Most trainees do not need to attend the ARCP meeting itself. The panel reviews your evidence independently, and you will only be invited to join the meeting if the panel needs to discuss your progression directly with you. If attendance is required, you will receive clear instructions and a Teams link in advance. Occasionally, the panel may decide during the review process that you should attend. If so, you may be contacted by phone on the day to inform you of the meeting.

If you are asked to attend, the meeting is usually brief and supportive. The panel may explore your training progress, any challenges you have faced, and what additional help or adjustments might be useful going forward.

Whether or not you attend, your ARCP outcome will be recorded in your RCGP Portfolio, and you will receive written confirmation after the panel has completed its review.
