Less Than Full Time

F or those trainees who are 'Less than Full Time Trainees' (LTFTTs) ePortfolio evidence can be gathered on a pro-rata basis. This approach means that LTFTTs will collect the same amount of evidence as full time trainees, but over a longer period of time.

Trainees will continue to have regular educational reviews. For these interim reviews supervisors make a judgement of progression for the stage of training normally based on pro-rata evidence as a minimum. However there may be situations dependent on individual trainees performance and progression where more than the minimum evidence is required.

On the adjacent tabs you will find a quick guide for trainees working less than full time in General Practice: Ensuring the balance of clinical and educational activities.

Trainees in hospital and GP training posts who would like to convert to LTFT status do need to apply to the Deanery for approval to see if they meet the criteria. More information can be found on the Deanery website.

A 100% trainee works 5 days, 10 sessions or 40 hours a week. The division of teaching/learning time for a 100% trainee is 7 clinical sessions or 28 hours and 3 learning sessions or 12 hours a week.

Recognised Learning activities are:

1. VTS teaching i.e VTS sessions and cluster groups work;

2. Practice protected eductaional activities e.g. tutorial time, feedback time, observed surgeries for COTs, practice educational meetings; and

3. Personal Study Time e.g to attend clinics, courses, on line learning and e-portfolio updating, further small group work, and other activities (e.g. Audit).

An 80% trainee works 80% of the week, i.e. 4 days. It take 15 months to complete 12 months of WTE training. Every four weeks an 80% trainee will complete the same training commitment as a 100% trainee will complete over 3 weeks.

In 3 weeks a 100% has 3x7 = 21 clinical sessions and 3x3 = 9 educational sessions.

It follows therefore, that every four weeks an 80% trainee will also expect 21 clinical sessions and 9 educational sessions.

If this trainee has 5 clinical sessions each week and attends VTS every week, they would have practice educational activity each week and personal study time each week, except for the forth week when they would need to have an extra clinical session (6) and only one educational session in addition to VTS, this could be tutorial one month and personal study the next.

Given clinical practice is essential to being a GP and crucial for success at CSA, it is important to ensure clinical time is not lost..

A 60% trainee works 60% of the week, i.e. 3 days. It take 20 months to complete 12 months of WTE training. Every five weeks a 60% trainee will complete the same training commitment as a 100% trainee will complete over 3 weeks.

Every 3 weeks a 100% has 3x7 = 21 clinical sessions and 3x3 = 9 educational sessions.

It follows therefore, that every five weeks a 60% trainee will also expect 21 clinical sessions and 9 educational sessions.

If this trainee has 4 clinical sessions each week and attends VTS every week, they would have practice educational activity one week and personal study time the next, except for the fifth week when they would need to have a extra clinical session (5) and only one educational session or over a year they would be losing out on over ten clinical sessions a year.

Given clinical practice is essential to being a GP and crucial for success at CSA, It is important to ensure clinical time is not lost. One might make it an observed surgery from time to time to cover all requirements..
